Fast Forward Fridays with Adela Bolet

Adela Bolet interview with Joanne Zippel for Fast Forward Friday on Zip Creative

Today we are very excited to introduce Fast Forward Fridays!

Fast Forward Fridays is a curated weekly questionnaire asked of a member of the Zip Creative Community each Friday.

We interview each artist and then post their answers for all to enjoy! It is an amazing opportunity for our weekly guests to share some of the projects they have going on, the ways they are moving forward in their creative work and maybe even divulge a tidbit or two about their process!

This week we are featuring actress-writer-producer Adela Bolet who is starring in her one woman show, WOMEN WITHOUT BORDERS  at the Venus/Adonis Theatre Festival this weekend in NYC! For more information about the show or to get your tickets before they are gone follow this link : http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/1157844  WOMEN WITHOUT BORDERS is running through Sunday February 22nd.

In her  one-woman show, Adela portrays seven unforgettable women who break all the rules and come alive on the stage in word, song, movement and light.  Adela’s inspiration comes from Gertrude Stein, Hildegarde Von Bingen, Anaïs Nin, Remedios Varo, Dorothy Day, Violeta Parra and Anna Russel.

Q: What was the inspiration and impetus for doing this project?

I wanted to develop my own work and I wanted to seek out inspiration from other women that had touched me in my life and had some parallel experiences that I could drawn upon and inspire me.

Q: Who are your artistic heroes – who have had an impact on you and your work?

The seven women I am portraying (in my show) some of them are saints and some of them are sinners and everything in between. Hildegarde Von Bingen, Remedios Varo.

Q: What keeps you motivated as an artist?

Wow. Well, trying to find employment.

Also, there are so many stories to tell that have not found a voice . That is some of the motivation for doing my own work as opposed to doing other people’s work. I have a compulsion to communicate and to be alive. I come alive on stage. I really enjoy that.

Q: What other projects would you like to tell us about?

I am toying with the idea of a web series at the moment. I haven’t quite narrowed down the subject but it is in the very early stages. I want to direct in the theatre. I have a wonderful play by a Spanish writer, Fuga Mundi. It deals with the subject of identity. It take places in medieval Spain right after the expulsion of the Jews and the moors but it is very relevant to today in how we treat each other as human beings as opposed to fighting for religious identity. Shakespeare.  I have it as a goal to do some of the great Shakespearean roles such as Gertrude and the nurse from Romeo and Juliet. Artistsas Españolas in Nueva York. In the past we have created developed works. Things that are done in the theatre but include original work, multimedia and multi-disciplinary.

Q: What is one instance of knowing you are living in your vision?

When I was doing Joanne’s (Zippel of Zip Creative) workshop. All my asks were immediately gratified because there were people in the group that could step up to the plate and do these things with me   It was marvelous and very gratifying.

Q: What is one accomplishment are you most proud of?

I am proudest of my children. I have 3 children and they are all thriving. Doing good things.

Q: If there were no barriers to entry, what is one thing you would be doing?

I guess maybe run an art school or community type organization.

Q. What do you do to stay connected to your creative self?

I pray. And I read a lot.

Q: If you could let go of something that has held you back, what would it be?

My extra fat.

Q: What is your favorite piece of art?

Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony

Q: What person do you most admire, living or dead?

Oh boy that’s a toughie… I would say Hildegard.

Q: If you could be known and celebrated for one thing, what would it be?

For being a joyful and giving person

Q: If you could describe yourself in one word what would it be?

Unpredictable

Q: What is your guilty pleasure?

I like Ferrero Roche’s candies

Q: If you could sit down with yourself 15 years ago, what would you say?

Keep walking. That’s when I broke my back and I used to be a dancer. That was a very shocking change of direction in my life.

Q: Where would you most like to live?

Just with my family, wherever it is.

Q: What is your idea of success?

When you have a legacy to leave to others. Not a monetary legacy I mean, but a life legacy and you have been able to give to others and use your talents to the greatest extent possible.

Q: What is your idea of happiness?

It depends on the day. Happiness is having a good belly laugh.

Q: Final Thoughts?

Be open to adventure and to change. First of all so we don’t get stuck in a rut but secondly because it is so exhilarating.
