Getting the Support You Need

Great Gatsby book cover for Getting the Support You Need by Joanne Zippel for Zip Creative

Is the next Great American Novel sitting unfinished on your desktop? I’ve seen this happen many times with my clients. They have a wonderful idea for a book, play, screenplay or other work of art but life keeps getting in the way. Instead of spending their time on their creative pursuits, they are
working a 9-to-5 – or longer – job to pay the bills or are trying to meet the needs of their family.

Sometimes, though, it isn’t the outside world they are struggling against. Sometimes it is self-doubt that their work isn’t good enough. Other times, the horror stories about breaking into “the business” makes them feel that no one would give their work a first glance, no matter how spectacular it is.

These thoughts can stop a promising and fulfiling career from ever getting off the ground. To stop this from happening, you need the right kinds of support and encourgement especially from people who understand exactly what you are going through. Most big cities – and even the suburbs! – have a thriving artistic community. Look online for meetups in your neighborhood. Many writing groups, for example, encourage members to share excerpts from their works without the fear of judgement. Knowing that other people are interested in what you have to say will give you the incentive you need to work on your project.

If you live in a small community and miles from the nearest city, you should explore the many groups that exist onine. Can’t find anything that suits your needs? Why not form a group yourself?

I know how important it is for you to stay focused on your pursuits and to believe that one day you could achieve them. I’ve put together a eight-session workshop for writers, performers, visual artists and others to give you the tools you need to set goals, formulate strategies and put them into action. You will also become part of a community with other artists, and share and expand resources around your work.

Are you ready to take that journey with me? I’d love to hear from you!
